Mt. Diablo’s Mitchell Canyon is one of the great nature walks in the Bay Area. Butterflies patrol the creek, delicate flowers such as Elegant Clarkia adorn the trailsides, and reptiles scamper about. We’ll hike up the easy canyon trail, have some lunch and return, observing and learning about the plants and animals of this special place.
Ever wonder what critters lurk beneath the surface of the waters around Jack London Square in Oakland, CA? Here is your chance to see them. We will have a table top displayfor you to see, touch and get comfortable with organisms from the docks that may include sponges, sea squirts, bryozoans, skeleton shrimp and even some bio-luminescent brittle stars!

Knowland Park presents a rare glimpse of Oakland’s distinctive landscape without the human overlay. The natural habitats of the park are intimately connected to their geologic setting. This free walk will take us around the heart of the park as we study the shapes of the land, the rocks that crop out on it, and the geological features that underlie it (including the Hayward Fault and Chabot Fault). The wide views from Knowland Park’s gentle hills will lead us to consideration of other topics of Oakland geology, Bay Area geology on the regional scale andCalifornia as a whole.
Bring drinking water, sunscreen, a hat, and comfortable walking shoes! There are no bathroom or drinking water facilities at Knowland Park.

This is a free event, but suggested donation of $5-10 is appreciated.
